Abstract

In this paper the A. describes the development of valleys and tors, together with the stratigraphy of the aeolian cover beds (tephra and interbeds) which have accumulated since emplacement of the Mamaku Ignimbrite c. 140 ka. Based on these data a broad climatic and geomorphic history of the Plateau during the last 140 ka is derived. Late Pleistocene climate fluctuations are also examined to determine how their interaction with topography and vegetation have regulated tephra and loess accumulation, soil development and erosion
