Disturbance of natural ecosystems by phosphorite extraction

Abstract

The interaction between natural and technogenic ecosystems in the vicinity of the Kingisepp phosphorite deposit in Leningrad Oblast is investigated. In mined areas, the material of spoil heaps is suitable for biological recultivation. Soil formation proceeds rapidly on them by the Sod-Carbonate pattern. Technogenic pollution of undisturbed soils in the vicinity of the phosphorite enterprise is most pronounced at distances of 5 km or less, but also occurs in milder form to a distance of 15 km ; it is manifested by major changes in the physicochemical, chemical, and biological properties of the soils
