At the turn of the nineteenth century Chicago experienced a literary explosion. Writers of urban fiction were trying to make sense of the modern city. Common to both literary and theoretical discourses was the recourse to organic metaphors to describe the city. The A. also examines the points of view adopted by the urban writers and explores the spatial constructions of the city
