Abstract

This paper describes changes in channel geometry on a little-studied reach of the Rio Grande, in which flow has been depleted by upstream water control and diversion systems. Initial shrinking of the channel produced positive feedback to the decrease in discharge and sediment transport capacity. The river approached a balanced sediment budget both by increasing its capacity by shortening and steepening, and by decreasing sediment input by migrating away from tributaries
