Abstract

Geography as an important subject in the centralized educational system of Israel has its roots in the national ideology of Zionism. The first geography concepts learned in school relate to the child's local environment in a pedagogical area called « homeland studies ». Regional geography has dominated in Israel; until the early 1970s systematic human geography was scarcely taught. American geography exerted a strong influence in beginning to change that focus.―(DWG)
