Abstract

The evolution of the course of the Meuse River was reconstructed from Liège to Maastricht. New pieces of terraces were discovered and as much information as possible on the altitudes of terrace bases were collected. For the first time, the correlations of terrace pieces were done taking into account the existence of paleomeanders. That method has introduced new correlations of terraces. The capture of the Meuse downwards from Liège was modeled. Correlations of Higher Terraces were done without referring to tectonic movements which were involved in previous publications. A chronostratigraphical model of the terraces is proposed; this shows an important upheavel of the Ardenne during the Quaternary
