Abstract

Biomasses and [13]C/[12]C ratios of suspended matter (MS) were measured in three different areas of the North Sea : in the central part, in the Southern Bight, and at the Scheldt mouth. The concentrations of MS in surface waters are quite constant (about 10 gWW.m[−3]) in the whole southern North Sea, but become ten times larger in the estuary. Carbon isotope ratios display a normal marine value in the sea and decrease in the Scheldt owing to terrestrial inputs. Neither MS biomass nor its δ C show significant variations during the tidal cycle in the river
