Abstract

The paper is specifically dealing with that aspect of North Sea pollution. Gasiform as well as particulate matters are emitted in the atmosphere via burning and other pollution processes. After physical dispersion and chemical transformation these pollutants may be dropped in sea by deposition processes. Heavy metals are principally in the particulate phase. In dry weather conditions these particles are removed from the atmosphere by gravitation, turbulent diffusion and impaction; this is called dry deposition. During precipitation particles may be captured by rain drops or snow-flakes and dropped into the sea : this is wet deposition
