Abstract

The aims of this paper are to use historical sources to determine channel changes since initial European settlement in 1812; to compare these known changes with those determined from a detailed investigation of a series of alluvial cutoffs in the same reach which were abandoned at various times since 1879; and to use the cutoff infills to determine changes in flood sediment load over time. A detailed record of historical channel changes on the lower Hunter River in southeastern Australia has shown that this channel responds to naturally alternating periods of high and low flood activity, called flood- and drought-dominated regimes respectively
