Abstract

To determine the response of the Columbia River system to Holocene climatic change and to suggest a pattern of response to future climatic change, the AA. have examined the alluvial history of the Columbia and Okanogan rivers in north-central Washington in conjunction with data from other localities in the Columbia River system and a regional climatic record inferred from geomorphic, palynological, and other paleontological evidence. Using a detailed, well-dated depositional record, they document the timing and duration of fluvial system responses to inferred climatic perturbations that resemble conditions projected under global warming scenarios
