Abstract

Forest decline in Southern Belgium and in Luxembourg is unevenly distributed. Mapped soil/lithological characteristics could not explain health patterns of the stands. Soil and foliar analyses provided valuable data related with forest decline symptoms. Healthy stands are only found on soils sufficiently rich in exchangeable Mg (and K) and less acid or in areas with supposed rather low air pollution. Threshold values for health risks are based on exchangeable Mg contents. Interactions with other site factors are suspected to magnify nutrient stress. - (Les AA.)
