Abstract

To find the first Greek attestations of Apennine, the passage of Stephanus Byzantinus in which is affirmed that Pisander of Laranda used this word in his work is analysed. The real first Greek attestation appears in Polybius, but goes back to his source, Fabius Pictor. The paper shows that the indirect evidence of the existence of Appennine in the IV cent. b.C. is given by the Table of Veleia in which appears the word with the original meaning
