Abstract

After a century of decline in the United States, microbreweries made a resurgence starting around 1980. A. discusses how a handful of Germanic giants after world War II drove hundreds of smaller breweries out of business. In the 1980s new American breweries emerged in California, modeled after a similar renaissance in Great Britain. The microbrewery has now diffused throughout the country as beer drinkers crave more local flavor and a sense of place. - (SLD)
