The Midland Mango region : a reflection of German channel migration ?

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

CAMPBELL C. ;

Abstract

Paper seeks an explanation of why the common green pepper was renamed mango in the Ohio Valley region. More than two thousand undergraduates in 41 colleges and universities were surveyed. The responses revealed the greatest knowledge of the term mango in the southern midland regions of Indiana and Ohio, southeastern Illinois, and around Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. The usage of the word mango is correlated with German channel migration to those areas in the mid-19th century. Why the Germans used that word for green peppers could not be ascertained at time of publication. - (SLD)
