Abstract

Paper examines the role of the temple as an important symbol for ethnic regrouping of Hindu immigrants in the United States. The new temples in postindustrial America provide a nexus of cultural expression that could lead to a renaissance in temple building and possibly in Hinduism itself. There is an extensive discussion of the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, reportedly the first and certainly the best known temple in the United States. - (SLD)
