Abstract

Study focuses on the recordings of three contemporary performers from West Texas - Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, and Terry Allen - to demonstrate the influence that geography has on music and the capacity that sing has to create strong images of place. The three artists grew up in West Texas in the 1950s and 1960s and left it as soon as possible. This study addresses their earliest albums, where the influence of West Texas and Lubbock, in particular, are most pronounced. - (SLD)
