Pilgrimage holy sites : a classification of Jewish holy sites in Israel

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

COLLINS-KREINER N. ;

Abstract

Paper contains an analysis of the characteristics of Jewish holy sites in contemporary Israel in terms of concepts introduced in recent years by Erik Cohen and Victor and Edith Turner. In particular, the paper deals with the Turners' concept of the pilgrimage site as a peripheral center out there. A. contends that the Turners' concept was culture-bound, tied to the Christian experience. In Judaism, the main pilgrimage site, the Western Wall, is the center of the world because religious and political centers are fused. - (SLD)
