Abstract

There is an imagined dichotomy between American big cities and small towns. The former are supposedly unfriendly, impersonal, and prone to social deviance. The latter are warm and friendly, like a nurturing extended family. A. argues that these sterotypes have blinded us to locality-based communities within the big cities. He calls for a fuller understanding of how small town idealizations have influenced metropolitan America. - (SLD)
