Dependency and development in the copper mining region of Sonora, Mexico

HARNER J. ;

Abstract

Study measures dependency in northeastern Sonora as Mexico followed three different development models : liberalism (American Capitalist Era of 1895-1961), import substitution (Mexican Era of 1961-1982), and neoliberalism (Free Trade Era of 1982-present). Dependency criteria are : lack of urban hierarchy, dendritic flow of goods, marked concentration of wealth, and simplified social stratification. The American Era witnessed increased dependency, the Mexican Era promoted a more equitable share of wealth, and the Free Trade Era has shown mixed results such as more job opportunities but greater concentrations of wealth. - (SLD)
