Abstract

Cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning observations for the warm season thunderstorms (May-September) of 1989 and 1990 were analyzed for the Great Lakes region. Diurnal variations in the frequency, spatial extent, flash density, amplitude, and polarity of CG lightning flashes are considered. Identifying the diurnal variations of lightning activity will improve the understanding of the characteristics of thunderstorms that occur at different times of the day. A large degree of intraseasonal (i.e., month to month) variation was observed in the diurnal patterns for several of the lightning parameters
