Abstract

The paper focuses on preserving the identity of geography as the discipline to understand everyday life. Routes taken in research and teaching are based on the discipline's historical roots, its perspectives, philisophy and methodology. Particular reference is made to South Africa and to the significance of a sense of place and a sense of time in the interpretation of geographical realities. Accommodation of developments in the field of technology and the acquisition and use of information are acknowledged in an era of increasing globalisation and interdependence. - (AJC)
