Abstract

This paper provides a summary of the activity and role of Sándor Radó a famous cartographer and Russian spy in Switzerland during the Second World War in the preparation of the 1 : 2 500 000 scale world map. After World War II international efforts have been made by the UN to produce a world map in the scale of 1 : 1 000 000. Howewer, this scale was secret in the Soviet Union, thus Radó proposed the scale of 1 : 2 500 000 which in turn was rejected by the UN. Radó worked out the concept and the first sheet (London) of the world map series was presented by Radó at the London meeting of the IGU in 1964. - (ZK)
