Landscape regeneration by seeds and successional pathways to restore fragile tropandean slopelands
published at : Managing fragile ecosystems in the Andes
Analysis of how land abandonment in Tropandean landscapes, particularly in the study area of the Maquipucuna Reserve of northwestern Ecuador, has contributed to land degradation, especially of the species composition and community structure of montane forest patches. Failed succession due to recalcitrant pasture grasses is discussed. Suggested that montane forest clearing should include treefall survivors, such as guava and pagche (Nectandra membranacea), to stimulate seed disperal for ecological succession. - (SLD)
