Abstract

Paper examines the history of vicuña conservation in Peru over the last 30 years. Management strategies have shifted from protection via centralized administration to sustainable utilization via legal custody in the campesino communities. Although the shift in policy has provided a strong incentive to protect the species and recent data indicates a decline in poaching, it is still too early to know the outcomes of the recent policy changes. - (SLD)
