Abstract

Dating at least to the 11th century, bisses are a traditional irrigation system built in response to the periodic summer water deficits in the Valais canton of Switzerland. System expanded in 15th century in order to intensify meadow production and remained relatively stable up to the end of the 19th century. Paper describes 20th century changes, the long-term sustainability of bisses, their relationship with other mountain irrigation systems, and irrigation planning. - (SLD)
