Abstract

In this Karakorum-Himalaya valley, the women do all the subsistence work : household, farming, pasturing, and selling of any surplus production. the men leave the valley for work in the plains or as porters for mountaineering expeditions. The men are dependent on the women for survival, but the latter are regarded as backward and inferior. The women have an appearance of equality to men in their dress, comportment, etc., but they are, according to the author, pawns of a patriarchal capitalist-Muslim society. - (SLD)
