Abstract

This paper gives a historical geographical analysis about the most important features of ethnic German population in Tolna County, Hungary. This county belongs to the so-called schwab Turkey, where the largest ethnic minority group of Hungary can be found. The first German settlers arrived here during the 18th century and established numerous settlements whose population was exclusively German by origin. The number and spatial structure of Germans in Tolna changed a lot later on, but until the end of Second World War this minority was one of the most important ones in Hungary. The situation changed dramatically in the second half of the 1940s, when a large part of Germans was expelled also from this county. Thus, the formely compact block of ethnic Germans was dissolved and the number of German ethnic minority became relatively low today. - (ZK)
