Abstract

The mountains of the Western Cape Province fulfil a vital water supply function. In order to protect the supply, it is important to understand the natural soil erosion rates in the mountains and human influence upon them. The variety of management practises are analyzed, notably seasonal burning. High intensity wildfires have the potential to cause large increases in stormflow and sediment yields in burned catchments. Suggestions are offered for conservation of the resources. - (AJC)
