Abstract

Replacement of a diversity of landraces with few unified modern varieties as part of a wider agricultural modernization is the main cause of genetic erosion. Genetic erosion has negative developmental effects when the modern varieties which replace local varieties are or become inappropriate for the social, economic and crop-specific conditions and opportunities prevailing among farmers. Two case studies, based on fieldwork in Tanzania, illustrate the causes and its impact on affected communities of erosion of crop genetic resources
