Abstract

Discusses the philanthropy of the Rockefeller Foundation's International Health Board (IHB) in various counties of São Paulo, Brazil. Special attention is paid to the relationship between the IHB, the São Paulo Sanitary Service (SSESP), and the state's coffee elites, who were eager to control hookworm and other contagious diseases on their plantations in order to reduce their dependence on immigrant labor. - (SLD)
