Abstract

An examination of one of the narrative wars between the Maori and the pakeha (New Zealanders of European descent), the construction of Native rebels in Governor George Grey's proclamation to Chiefs of Waikato published in Auckland in 1863. Author deconstructs the traditional binary representation of racism in colonial history by introducing class and gender. The rhetoric of the proclamation is found to be based on debasement, hegemonic masculinity and abjection. - (SLD)
