Abstract

Metropolitan Phoenix, like most cities in the US West, is a low-density, automobile-dependent complex. Although the number of freeway miles per 100,000 residents is much lower than envisioned in the 1980s, the voters of Phoenix refused to approve measures to expand mass transit. A travel demand management program has been mandated for Phoenix to reduce the number of people who drive alone. Women tended to drive alone more than men because of domestic and work responsabilities. - (SLD)
