Abstract

An overview of the history of academic geography in the Pacific Northwest for geography departments that published in this Yearbook between 1990 and 1994. The history begins in 1856, the year Monmouth University (today Western Oregon), the oldest school considered in this study, was founded. The origin, growth, character and key figures of various US and Canadian departments in the region are well-documented. The number of geography faculty in the US part of the region peaked in 1970, with most US departments reporting major crises at least once. - (SLD)
