Abstract

This presidential address to the Asoociation of Pacific coast geographers (Sacramento, California, 11 June 1996) shows the many contributions that Linnaeus and his students made to understanding the world's geographical variation. The method of observation used by Linnaeus and his traveling students was clearly within the man-land tradition of geography, and it significantly advanced knowledge not only of plant classification, but also of agriculture, minerals, geology, geomorphology and folk culture. - (SLD)
