Abstract

Biomedical literature was reviewed for the period 1965-1995 to determine the spatial distribution of shigellosis or bacillary dysentery. The more virulent specis of Shigella (S. dysenteriae and S. flexneri) predominated in less economically advanced countries and the less virulent species (S. boydii and S. sonnei) predominated in advanced countries. A complex interplay of factors correlated with the spatial distribution of the species ; the most important were hygienic practices, water-borne transmission and antibiotic resistance. - (SLD)
