Abstract

Three themes give coherence to the papers that comprise this special issue. Theme one is concerned with why people and communities conflict as they do in the place of Northern Ireland. It investigates why the conflict is violent and it has been so protracted. The second theme explores the nature and significance of cultural and political diversity within the communities which comprise society in place. The final theme concerns the effects of protracted violent struggle upon the nature of place and people in that place
