Abstract

An intense rainstorm affecting steep pasture-covered mudstone hill country in the North Island of New Zealand triggered many hundreds of shallow, rapid earthflows. Thirty of these and their associated site and soil conditions were investigated in an attempt to identify the factors controlling runout behaviour. The parameters were statistically analysed together with eight independent variables, representing site geometry, initial landslide dimensions, and soil properties, including indices of soil mobility, shear stress, and strength
