Abstract

This paper describes the automation of a manual approach to the numerical modelling of spatial variability in topography. The morphometric model presented here is implemented by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology and uses a digital elevation model (DEM) as raw data. The example, the entire state of New Mexico, United States, is regional in its spatial scale. This paper describes first experiments with a quantitative regional model of land surface that may, in turn, be used to develop explanations for the role of landsliding in the evolution of a semi-arid lanscape
