Abstract

Karst aquifers are particularly susceptible to pollution and require special management that takes into account their unusual mix of hydrological processes. Case studies are discussed of dispersed source contamination of nitrates in tertiary limestone aquifer in South Australia and in the Chalk of Britain. Special problems are identified of defining the links between surface contamination and abstraction points for water supply, and in understanding the time lags and form of movement in the saturated and unsaturated zones. Control is much easier for point-source sources of pollution
