Abstract

Particular reference is made in this paper to human impacts on karsts in France, Italy and the Dinaric region, where the most notable impacts are on natural vegetation, soil and water resources. Deforestation commenced in the Neolithic and erosion of thin karst soils soon followed. The latter half of the 20th century has seen the greatest impact on water resources. Karst groundwater levels have fallen, pollution from agriculture and urbanisation and tourism has spread underground, and new problems have arisen from intensive tourism
