Abstract

More than 5000 rural settlements in the Lesser Himalayan Kumaun of India have overexploited the forests, especially since Independence. The cast of characters in this drama played out today are peasant women, the Chipko movement, the timber mafia, and the Van Raji tribal group. Recommendations made for a way out of the dilemma. - (DWG)
