Abstract

The first section describes the broad political and historical context of legislation. The contours of the New Right political agenda are outlined. British travellers are introduced as folk devils for this New Right. In the second section of the paper attention is given to the threat posed by travellers to capitalist spatiality. There is a discussion of the nomadic threat and the challenge to the rural idyll's specific imaginative geography. These issues are illustrated through an engagement with debates on travellers
