The formation of berms on sandy beaches is examined in connection with nearshore wave and sediment dynamics. A series of experiments on the formation of berms were carried out in a small-scale wave flume. Three growth types of berms were found: landward, upward and seaward types. Time-series data of the beach profile obtained at Ajiga-ura beach, Ibaraki, Japan, were used for the examination of applicability of the experimental results to the field situation, where collapsing related berms developed
