The debates surrounding the changing nature of the city suggest that there has been an important shift in the way that western cities are governed. There has been a reorientation to a more outward-orientated stance designed to encourage local growth and economic development. The paper seeks to consider the ways in which geographers are attempting to make sense of the role of the new urban politics in the transformation of the city.
