Abstract

The paper begins by assessing trade through UK seaports, and considers trends in respect of port employment. Port hinterland connections by road, rail and water are considered, again identifying significant trends. Competition between UK seaports, and between UK seaports and other ports and transport modes is considered. The changing nature of the UK ports industry is discussed and, finally, the article provides a brief evaluation of recent UK government policy in respect of seaports
