Abstract

The karst region of southeastern Missouri, which contains North America's largest springs and a rich biota, has its natural attributes threatened by mineral leasing for lead mines whose tailings pollute water. A classic environemntal conflict is brewing ; the US government owns most of the land and is the leaser. - (DWG)
