Abstract

Manganese oxide mineral materials, important sources of Mn for man and all manner of living matter, and commonly encountered in surficial environments, are outlined in this chapter. The AA. present a brief overview of the methods of analysis and identification, and mention the various sites of occurrence: desert varnish, in soils and in the ocean, as background for this paper. They focus on the understanding of why Mn is more mobile than Fe on earth surfaces, and hope to make the reader aware of how little they understand the processes producing the Mn oxide minerals observed in a range of present and past biogeochemical and pedochemical environments
