Climatic change and landscape development: an example from the past

Scenarios from the past are chosen which show environmental conditions similar to the present and possible near-future ones in order to evaluate the consequences of specific paleoclimatic changes for landscape evolution. Then, the degree of equivalence between the analogous geological events and the actual situations can be discussed. Two cases of rapid warming are taken from the geological history to illustrate the impact of such a climatic change on the landscape of the lowlands in the Netherlands. The paleoclimatic data presented are derived from ecological relations and sedimentary processes in the Mark and Meuse river basins
