Abstract

Study of the manufactured images of the new tourism that longs for reassurance from an imagined past. In the state of Iowa, USA, this past has four faces : Old World (ethnic heritage) ; Frontier America (early settlements, forts, battlefields) ; Old Town (public life of the 1920s) ; and Agrarian America (preindustrial farms and countrysides). Many towns in need of economic revitalization now follow detailed marketing plans to promote themselves to tourists in one of these four categories. However, in the long run, towns will need more than any of these commercial ploys in order to survive. - (DWG)
