Abstract

The fragmentary early writings of Turgot contain one of the first, clearly developed statements of a stadial theory of human progress. This idea of progress is seen as one of the most important intellectual formulations of the Enlightenment. the first reference to the theory appears in a short essay composed while a student at the Sorbonne.
